Some of the specialists they talked to said it would be best for everyone if Margaret was put in an institution, but Jake and Kathe chose to listen to their family doctor, who told them to take their daughter home and love her. Margaret was a vibrant baby and soon Jake and Kathe were taking her everywhere with them. There were challenges: sometimes neighbourhood kids were mean to Margaret, who wouldn’t do anything to defend herself, and Jake and Kathe learned through the grapevine the hurtful things that some people were saying. Some of their neighbours seemed to think that Down syndrome was contagious.

The family became active in the local association for community living, a group of people with developmental disabilities and their families who were helping to erase the superstition of earlier decades when children like Margaret were hidden away. Living with Margaret changed not only their own unfounded prejudices, but those of family and friends as well.
